Is It Safe To Lift Weights When You're In Pain?

Right now you're in pain and worried about making it worse.

You're worried about doing permanent damage and having to give up lifting forever.

It's stopping you from lifting and your mental health is suffering.

You're scared to go heavy and you've lost the confidence you get from feeling strong.

And what you really want to know is it safe to train with your pain?

You want to feel confident that you're safe to keep lifting so you don't lose all your gains or get fat.

Well don't worry I have a simple system that you can use to keep you safe.

It's called the Traffic Light System

Green

You had no pain or very little pain when doing the exercise and after.

This means you don't need to adjust your training and you can keep lifting.

Amber

This means that you had some pain during or after the exercise but you felt like it was manageable.

In this instance you don't need to adjust your training but be aware that you're close to the limit of what you can handle right now.

Red

This means that your pain was too much for you to handle during the exercise or after.

This means you need to make an adjustment to your training next session to allow you to keep training.

For example lowering the weight until you get back to Green or Amber.
